Nespresso would like to reassure its Club Members and consumers that we share their concerns about the economic and social welfare of coffee farmers and their workers working with us.
In 2003, Nespresso worked with the Rainforest Alliance to launch its Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program to help protect the future of the highest quality coffees for consumers and secure the livelihoods of the farmers and the communities that grow those coffees. Farms on the AAA Program commit to adhering to the Sustainable Agriculture Network standards for social and environmental responsibility, including the fair treatment and good working conditions for workers.
As part of its AAA Program, Nespresso pays farmers premiums for both quality and sustainability, with a premium of about 30% to 40% above the standard market price for coffee. Even with the recent volatility of coffee prices, our premium means we are in fact paying significantly more than Fair Trade minimum price. More than paying a premium, the programme is about building a long-term relationship with coffee farmers to improve three aspects:
- quality – by helping them adopt best practices in coffee cultivation to protect the supply of the highest quality coffee
- sustainability – by helping farmers to become more environmentally and socially responsible
- productivity – by helping farmers to improve productivity and implement cost reduction initiatives to increase their net income
In 2010, 60% of our green coffee came from the AAA Program, against a commitment of 80% by 2013. With an estimated further 40,000 farms joining the program by then, we’ll have a direct relationship with some 80,000 farmers. They, their families and communities will benefit from sustainable coffee cultivation.
In this context, we believe that Nespresso is doing more for a better outcome for farmers, their families and their workers than what the campaign is calling for.
