Nespresso Ecolaboration™ ambassador inspires young people to preserve nature

Promoting sustainability through firsthand experiences

Imagine discovering the fjords of New Zealand or the icy Antarctic from an eco-friendly aluminium sailboat. Learning about environmental conservation. And inventing solutions to urgent environmental challenges. Alongside famed explorer Mike Horn.

The Pangaea Expedition, led by Mike Horn and supported by Nespresso, is one of the most remarkable journeys of exploration ever taken. This programme is designed to promote sustainability, while teaching young people to preserve nature.

“After spending more than two decades exploring the world, I personally witnessed many alarming changes to the environment,” said explorer-adventurer Mike Horn. “The Pangaea Expedition taps the world’s most powerful energy source—the younger generation—to help create sustainable solutions.”

The Pangaea Expedition, which runs from 2008 to 2012, aims to educate youth about sustainability by enabling them to experience the natural world firsthand. Participants travel to ports around the world, while learning about environmental challenges and developing potential solutions.

Aluminium as a key material

The headquarters for the expedition is Pangaea, a 35-metre sailboat made from 50 tonnes of aluminium. In the spirit of the expedition, the boat was designed to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. For example, the lowermost part of the ship is 100% made of aluminium. And the ship produces energy with the lowest possible levels of emissions and pollution.

“Having Nespresso as a partner is quite exciting,” said Mike Horn, who leads all Pangaea expeditions himself. “We have a lot in common. We both strive to lead in our own fields, while promoting an optimistic and participative idea of sustainable development. We also both chose to use aluminium. Nespresso for its coffee capsules; and I for the Pangaea boat. Aluminium has many qualities. It performs well in extreme temperatures, it is light weight, resistant and durable. Aluminium is also infinitely recyclable. Imagine: after this expedition, we can recycle our own boat.”

Since 2009, Horn has been the ambassador for Ecolaboration™, the Nespresso sustainability platform.
